Horizontal and vertical groups in a daycare

When you first start orienting yourself to a daycare, you will find that different terms come along. This includes horizontal and vertical groups. We would like to explain the difference between the two types of groups and what kind of groups we use at Devi Kids.

Groups at the daycare

A childcare center works with horizontal or vertical groups. In horizontal groups, children of the same age are in daycare together. So you can have two groups (a group of 0 - 2 years and 2 - 4 years) or three groups (a group of 0 - 1.5 years, 1.5 - 2.5 years and 2.5 - 4 years: baby, toddler and preschool). In vertical groups in daycare, children of different ages are placed together, for example with one group from 0 to 4 years old. The choice of a particular group form depends on your own preferences, but also on the needs of your child. Below we give you some background information about the two types of group forms, so that you can make a good decision.

Horizontal groups

When you choose to sign your child up at a daycare with a horizontal group, he or she will get to know many peers. The advantage of this is that the children in the group are often about the same age in their development. In addition, activities and materials can be adjusted to the children's needs. The pedagogical staff can also specialize on the age of the children.

Vertical groups

In a vertical group, your child can be in the same group for 3 to 4 years. The advantages of this are that children stay together longer and any siblings can be in the group together. Also, the younger children can learn from the older children in the group, both in cognitive and motoric and social development. In this regard, your child may not be in the group with very many peers. Activities are often organized for all children together, making them less age-specific.

Horizontal groups at Devi Kids

At Devi Kids we have horizontal groups at all our locations After all, children are unique and so is their development! We believe that horizontal groups in childcare ensure that every child receives the attention and challenge they need. We believe it is important that each child in the group develops at his or her own tempo. Personal attention is at the center of Devi Kids.
